I have a '97 Merc. Sable. The heat will only blow luke warm air on high. All fluids are maintained and the engine is running right in the middle on the heat gauge. Any ideas?

If it is the thermostat like a lot of these say? What does one cost, and is it easier to do myself or have a mechanic do it?

your thermostat might be stuck open and its not letting the water in your car heat up enough to blow out hot air. Or check the heat/air knob it may be stripped and not turning it all the way

I agree with chelle b if your thermostat is toast and is locked in the open position your fluids are not getting up to temp before running it through the system.
Meaning instead of the coolant getting nice and hot it just stay's luke warm and that is what is getting to your heater core to heat the interior. Change the thermostat and it will most likely solve this problem for you.

I'd say you're probably right, sometimes Heater Hoses release a little of their lining, and it can obstruct flow. The hoses can still feel hot, at that temperature, you can't tell if one is slightly cooler then the other. And yes, it may be an Air Door distribution problem too. But to eliminate a blockage problem... Ya got to start over, drain the system, replace the hoses, but... before you reconnect them, BACKFLUSH your Heater Core. Just stick the water hose, up against one than the other of the heater hoses several times. You'd be surprised as to how much crap it can accumulate in there. Be sure to reconnect the hoses in the RIGHT places, it makes a difference.

change your thermostat or put cardboard in front of your radiator

Travis S - How much! You should try a differnt parts store! They cost about $5.

How easy depends on your car. Get an owners manual and read up. (about $15 for the book, well worth it)

Before you start replacing parts, you should flush the heater core, which is very cheap. That is normally the cause. Thermostats are about 20-40 bucks and another 30-50 to put in.

u need to check the coolant but only do it when the car is cool if it is full u might need a new thermostat. there are two rubber hoses that go to the fire wall take the hoses off where they go in to the radiator and take a water hose and put it in one and turn on the water not to high and water should run out of the hose if it do sent put it on the other hose when it runs out let it run for a min to clean it out. then put the hose back on and run the car and when The car cools off check the coolant level again.
