Regardless of current laws (US or Mexico), take as much up-to-date proof of identity and residency with you as you can (license, passport, etc). Better safe than sorry. And keep copies in a separate container or luggage or pocketbook or wallet or backpack, etc, in case you lose something important.

BTW, what difference does it make how they examine your documents?

Take your birth certificate too if possible. I am currently visiting the US and I came over through Laredo. It was a pain because if you don't have a passport they grill you when you come in to the US. Going to Mexico there isn't a problem, getting back is the headache. You can get a birth certificate online they cost anywhere from 35 to 60 dollars for fast delivery.
I gave them my drivers license and birth certificate and they still gave me the 3rd degree. Rediculous questions, but I guess it depends on who you run into and if their having a good day or not.
I live in Mexico, I am an American Citizen. I work as an English Teacher. I have a F3 and they didn't even want to see that, they just wanted me to prove that I'm a US citizen. I now have my passport so I can fly back in January.
Will you be on foot? I suggest you take a taxi. It can take up to 12 hours to cross the border by foot. The lines are horrible.

Good Luck!

You may travel just as a tourist, and once getting back you'll be asked what you are bringing from Mexico, some valid form of ID (don't have to bring all your personal file) and in the worst scenario, the customs officer may ask you where do you live, why you traveled to Mexico, etc.....just the basics

Should be no problem for now. After Jan. 31, I think some other documentation will be required but not until then.
They usually ask where you were born and what goods you are bringing back.
