There is no reason why it should be illegal. For any of the reasons that they will make a drug illegal, marijuana barely qualifies.
It's a joke that it's continued to be gone after so violently the the cops. We know why they do it. It's an easy bust because there is not near as much money in it as there is in cocaine and opiates, so the people that sell it are nowhere near as violent. Therefore, they can make busts, get their names in the paper, get their political careers rolling along and not risk their lives in the process. That's why you see 10x more marijuana busts. It's easy prey compared to the criminals that deal coke and smack. Those people are hardcore. Cops don't want to die any more than we do, but it's their job to enforce the laws. They even go out and teach to kids about how evil it is, but they only go after the easy meat.
You can't OD on it, you are not violent when taking it, you cannot get physically addicted to it and it does not have any negative societal effects such as increased crime, violence and family issues associated with it.
There is absolutely no reason why it should be illegal to this day, but the government in it's role of the decider of what you do with your body is just continued with the silliness of the drug prohibition problem. People in favor of keeping drugs illegal do not know about the ill effects of Prohibition and don't seem to care that it continues.
It's a simple thing to understand if you look at it through pure economics. If you make a commodity illegal, the cost of doing business goes through the roof. The cost of supplying the commodity is huge. This has all sorts of added effects, such as the risk people will take to make money at it, the risks people will take to use these commodities despite the known illegality and danger of it.
And if you look deeper into the problem, we used to have an alcohol problem at one time. Did before Prohibition. Did while Prohibition was in force. Did when it was repealed. Still do to this day, and no amount of stupid law stops people from using it.
Drug Prohibition in this day and age is the same. The real bad part about is the crime syndicates that pop up to continue to supply it. The government wants you to believe that they aren't the cause of all of the violence. They made it illegal, and therefore worth way more than it is worth as a pharmaceutical substance. Therefore, it's worth killing over. But, if you reduce it to the mere cost of doing business plus the rehab you'll inevitably have to support to some degree, it will not be worth dying over. The government's prohibition of drugs has financed the power of the drug lords since the War On Drugs was declared.
And in the end, who is to say what we do with our own bodies so long as it doesn't interfere with anyone else? The laws passed by the Drug Enforcement Acts are the most draconian, pointless and baseless laws on the books, and the American people gave away some more of their freedom in order to stamp out the problem they created in the first place.
Kafka would have loved us.

Yes it should be legalized and regulated. It is the safest drug known to mankind. It has no level of toxicity, no one has ever overdosed on it. It doesn't kill braincells and has many, many acceptable medical uses (Do a google search on medicinal marijuana). It has less side effects then any prescription drug and has far more uses then just getting high. It's pure hypocrisy and ignorance that has allowed its prohibition for so long. The fact that kids are so uneducated about it is astounding, way to go public school system, comparing marijuana a long side cocaine and meth or even alcohol. It's nothing like those and if used responsibly can be very fun recreationaly.

We spend billions a year putting people in jail who have bad habits. "smoking pot"
Cigs have poison in them yet they are legal and kill more people each week then (2) 911's.
Alcohol does have some nutritional value, and has been shown to cut heart disease and cancer when used in moderation. Although it does make people careless or violet. Also our birth rate would decline. Just think how many babies are made during drunk hook ups?!?!?!
so that is why booze is legal.
Weed. It should be legal, its way less harmful then cigs. It does not make people violent, it does have some medicinal value.
At the very least it should be like Europe. As long as you don't have enough to be considered selling it, You get a small fine kind of like a speeding ticket and you go on your marry way.

it has similar effects to being drunk, so the government could still hand out their DUI's and if alcohol and tobacco are legal than yes it should be legal. It would greatly diminish underground drug sales, the government could tax it , regulate it and it would generate money to the economy instead of the government spending more to eliminate it. people say it would make people smoke everyday, personally if it was legal I would still not smoke it. but I believe its a personal choice and people will still smoke weed so the government may as well legalize it to profit from it.

Not legal, but decriminalized. The only difference would be that possession charges would always be dropped. You might still have to go to jail to be arraigned, it can be used as probable cause for searching property, but all arrests would get expunged. This would alleviate the criminal justice system to some extent, and prevent the tragic life damaging effect that an arrest and conviction can bring to some undeserving users.

Making it legal
would help the world
for puffing is not a crime
It would stop the crime
distribution makes
and start a new tax line
Drinking is more harmful
but legal as can be
they've proved you cannot stop it
The mob just collected their fees
The same happens with puffing
can you this not see
The crime would stop
that organizes it
so let the puffers be
The time and money wasted on pot
could be more wisely spent
tracking murder, rape and other crimes
that do hurt you and me.

Should be legalized but controlled as other prescriptions are. There is plenty of scientific data that supports medical benefits.
It should be controlled because there is potential for abuse.
I agree with other users that there is a political agenda that is fueled by money, but that is not the root cause of the issue.

I say make it legal. Just about all recreational drugs should be legal, and marijuana is still just about the weakest drug people use (even weaker than alcohol and tobacco). There just plain isn't any good reason to keep it criminalized.
