I basically use my computer to surf the net, write papers and download music. The majority of the files on my computer are papers, pictures and music. I constantly go through and remove programs that I don't use but my computer takes forever to open Word and run other programs in general. Any suggestions of what I should do?

I would suggest adding more RAM. You probably have 512MB to 1GB right now.

If u have 512MB, upgrade to 1GB, if you currently have 1gb, upgrade to 2GB.

You can purchase Dell certified RAM from the Dell website, installation is very easy, just remove the old ones, and add new ones.

If a computer running Windows requires more memory/RAM then there is installed in the system to run a program, etc, it uses a small section of the hard drive for this purpose. This is called “Virtual” memory, or “Swap Filling”. If the “Swap” file is to small, then you will get a warning that the system can’t perform the operation that you have requested because sufficient “Virtual” memory isn’t available.

You need to enlarge the size of your “virtual memory/swap file”. So, do the following.

Right click “My Computer” and choose “Properties”.
In the “System Properties” window, click the “Advanced” tab.
Under “Performance”, click “Settings”.
In the “Performance Options” window, click “Advanced”.
Under “Virtual memory”, click “Change”.

Increase the size of the “Paging file” so that it is at least twice the size of your RAM. You can increase the size to “Maximum”, it won’t hurt your system at all.

Best cure.

If you really want to eliminate this problem, all you need do is to install more “Memory/RAM”.

Dell computers usually come with several preinstalled programs called "bloatware", due to the fact that they take resources from the operating system. The company does this as a previous arrangement with the software developers, but you may uninstall them provided the fact that they are not necessary for your PC ti function normally. For example, don't uninstall the soundcard driver, but you may take away trial versions if you don't need them. Once you get the garbage out, your computer will perform better. Please also check if you have resident programs in your Task Bar, as you may not need them now but they take space & RAM all the same.
