I have a dilemma, I have a friend who has an ex who has a son (from a previous girlfriend).... she recently broke up with him because he is an abusive jerk, just to keep that part short. Anyways, she tells me today that he called her last night and told her he was so drunk and high (pot) that he was laying on the floor and had to have his son bring him the phone. his son is 6 I believe.... I feel that I now have a decision to make about whether or not to call child protective services, long story short, he is a crappy father overall, and now knowing this, I feel that since nobody else feels is going to step up, I will need to be the one to do someting if I want this poor kid to get out of this situation. His mother is not the answer, she is a drug addict evidently. What would you do in a situation like this? If I call, he will accuse my friend of calling, and she will know it was me and be mad at me. in the end, I feel that his well being is more important. what to do?

If what you have said is unequivically true, then you do have a reason to call, but be absolutely sure before you start this.

He will suspect your friend but it could also be a neighbor, however Gazoo, you need to realize that sometimes when you do the right thing people get hurt, the most important thing here though is not your friends feelings or yours for that matter, but the welfare of the child.

I have a feeling that many children go through this very same type of thing and grow up just fine. So, you have a decision to make. Upset the apple cart to save an apple or let the horse walk by and hope the apple is ok on it's own.

I for one salute your concern, now the rest is up to you.

Look, at the end of the day, the child should ALWAYS be put first. If that child is suffering being in that enviroment, then it would be very responsible to call child services wheter you lose that friend or not. You have think about whats best for the child first.

You have a moral obligation to call and try to get the child some help. How would you feel if something tragic happened to child that could have been prevented by one phone call being made? Call. NOW.

I don't think you're in a position to call protective services, since you have witnessed nothing. It's all heresay. Why not call the child's mother, and tell her about this incident, and leave it up to her?
