Maybe a funny DVD, or something from a novelty store (think Spencers gifts).

Despite the temptation to give something silly (or of an "inappropriate" nature) to a coworker - resist it. That guy may be more sensitive than you realize - or his wife might make waves - or he may end up as your boss -or you may end up as his boss ----

Stick with something conservative- but fun

Here are some ideas

A calendar that appeals to his interests - as in Golf, Airplanes, fancy cars, Cooking whatever.

Poetry in a Box - those magnetized individual words - they're fun and thought provoking.

A book on learning a new language - French, Japanese etc.

Starbucks gift card - if he drinks coffee

A gadget that appeals to his personal interests (see above)

Again, something not expensive from your local book-store is always good - just resist the temptation to give him something silly or inappropriate.

Yes, this takes a bit of detective work - as in actually maybe even talking to Joe - about his off-work interests.

That doesn't mean it needs to be expensive either - a bag of golf tees or a nice, plush hand-towel for a rabid golfer is a great gift. And a would-be chef never has enough good wooden spoons (from Crate & Barrel) or maybe a strainer basket with a long bamboo handle - from a Chinese market.

Book stores have lots of neat "page a day" calendars and some are pretty hilarious like The Far Side comic ones. They run around 10.00 to 15.00 and can be proped on a person's desk. For the remainder of the 20.00 you could throw in a fancy bookmark, mini book light, or something reader oriented.

cologne, a tool kit from walmart, a flashlight, a billfold, a mug to drink coffee from on the way to work--insulated with lid--walmart, a joke book, a cd by larry the cable guy or one of those guys.
Merry Christmas
