I have a little Black molly and it is around 4 or so months old, but still really small (less than half inch size) I want to know what it is so I can name it. I already know HOW to tell the difference between the sexes, but my mom says you can't tell yet since it is so young/small. My question is are they born with the right parts, or do they develope after a certain age? As of right now it looks female, but I don't know, since it is so young.

I thought that was how it was, with them all being born female like. I will be watching it then, and keep calling it Molly I guess for the time being....

I was there when this little guy 3was born, so it is special, all his sisters and brothers were eaten by the mom as soon as they were born (she was a mean fish period, she wasn't just a bad mom) Luckily this one slipped into the fry part as soon as he came out and was smart enough to stay there.

You can usually sex them at about 3 months. Remember, they all grow at different rates, so some may take longer before you can tell. I'd say that by about 4 months you should be able to tell for sure.....I say this because I have thought a couple of times that I had one of one sex and then POOF, it changed, lol. So by 4 months you should be able to be pretty positive.

Good luck!!! ;o)

like the above posters said there are born as females and some develop into males between 2-4 months. you can tell the sex by the anal fin once the fish is mature. the female keeps a fan type fin where the mail will develop a tubler fin. the link attached will show a picture.

Are we talking about fish? If so, it depends on the fish. Each species is different. Usually, the males are more colorful, have longer fins, and grow a bit larger. But thats not all the time.

when they are about 3/4 to an inch you can usually tell and how long it takes for it to get that size depends on the size of tank and how many other fish are in it

As soon as they get large enough to see. As you know it is fairly simple to tell, you just need to wait until the fish is big enough.
