He was Roman Catholic. Elizabeth I had to be protestant. As a Catholic she was illegitimate and could therefore not be Queen. (Her father's divorce from Catherine of Aragon was not recognised by the Pope). His marriage to Mary (Elizabeth's half sister) was aimed at increasing Spanish power - they already had the Low Countries across the North Sea. Phillip II tried to take England by storm (Armada) but the storm took the Armada. It was more the weather in the English Channel which defeated the Armada and not Drake.

He caused a major problem by sending the Spanish Armada to invade England. But he didn't succeed.

Well one problem would be the fact that he tried to have her killed.

Another that he was behind numerous plots to overthrow her as queen.

But then, he saw her as a problem for him too.
