Because the more dependent the people become on government, the more power the elected (doling out the help) have.
It is a fallacy to believe they do it because no one will.
First of all, when you are responsible to fend for yourself, then you take more initiative to become more and do more for yourself.
Second, Americans (individually) are very very generous and philanthropic. Look at how quickly, effectively and generously private businesses and people gave to victims of Katrina, and Tsunami victims. There are many foundations and charities (both religious and NON religious) in your neighborhood and across the country that help unfortunate and downtrodden every day. If our bloated government would allow taxpayers to keep more of our own money there would be even more money available locally to help neighbors in need.

I think you mean socialists - which democrats are not. And, we already have a welfare system that does that in some cases. I think the democrats know that they cannot bring the cost down healthcare - being a caring party, they want to provide further help to those who currently have to make a choice between much needed medication and --- say --- rent. I live about 30 miles from the mexican border. My grandfather had a heart medication that (even after the insurace) cost $120 a bottle. I got it for him in mexico for 20 bucks - no insurance either. What does that tell you?

If you take care of the people they vote for you this gives the government more power. God Forbid people get a job and stop taking my tax money. Disabled people and the elderly are the only that people who should benifit from my money. If you can think are use a broom you should have a job or have applied yourself in school.

Why do the Republicans insist on taking care of the people in foreign countries while their own country is being destroyed economically.
People in Iraq have free health care courtesy of the USA government. They have billions in rebuilding contracts when they know that most of those buildings will be blown up in the next outrage of the muslims.
Why do they take care of muslims from birth ot death?
While ignoring their own country?

Cradle to the grave, baaaaby!
It makes government bigger. Bigger government equal more power. Having a bunch of people in society acting like drones with a skewed sense of entitlement keeps a pretty good voting base especially when they the Dems just keep on promising to open that blouse and pull out that nipple whenever the people need something.
'bout cover it?

Having people depend upon the government gives the government control over the people. Socialism at its fines, "I'm taking care of you so you have to do as I say". CONTROL is what progressive liberal democrats want.

I would suggest humbly both parties are in favor of more government meddling in our lives.
With Democrats, this increased government control comes under the guise of "social justice", and with Republicans this increased government control comes under the guise of "security and morale standards".
While Democrats advocate losing our rights to a private doctor, or owning a gun, the Republicans advocate losing our rights to privacy or choosing to end our own lives when we are in great pain.
Neither respect your civil rights much, neither believe that we are capable of taking care of our selves, and both pander to the extremes of their party to barter for increased power and government control.

Because you make one wrong move in this world and your out on your *** on the street. You may need these programs one day and then you'll be glad they are there.
The really sad part is, is that democrats don't do this because they only want to help out other democrats, they want to help anyone that may need it. At least that is why I believe in social programs.
But your right, we need that new stealth bomber that costs us 4 billion dollars. And that body armor for the troop........oh yeah they don't get that either.

Because they have no faith in the human spirit. They also know that forcing people to be dependent will ensure them the power they lust for- dependent people will support those who give the goodies. With few non socialist countries to go to, they know that we have no where to escape to. I am a working class guy but if you see what dependency does to people, it suck their very being out of them, it isnt humane, it is wrong. I am all for helping those in need to become self sufficient and productive but thats it. Americans used to be known as tough, rugged individualists who didnt know the meaning of quit but that is being stripped away slowly but surely

Because they ceased being true Democrats decades ago. Since the 1950's, they've become Socialists hiding behind the honorable old name of Democrat.
