Because sodium and potassium are very reactive metals, hence they don't occur in the elemental form in the Earth's crust. They can be kept as elemental metals in special fluids in the laboratory, and can provide fun for chemistry students who toss them into water and watch them explode (technically, react very rapidly with water molecules).
