September used to be the 7th month until the Roman emperors, Julius and Augustus, got their own sunny namesake months. This bumped everything after August up by two (October = 8+2 = 10th month).

This is because a long time ago September was the 7th month, October the 8th month, November the 9th month, and December the 10th month. Pope Gregory XIII then changed the calendar to the now familiar order. More info can be found at
