The same thing that causes evolution of any population. Genetic drift, gene flow, and mutations caused gene pools to change over time. These changes, combined with natural selection, led to the development of the human species.

Environmental stresses, such as predators, the availability of food and disease prevalence. Those who had even the slightest advantage over their peers were more like to survive and reproduce while under these stresses, which caused the disadvantageous traits to become a smaller percentage with each passing generation. What those traits are depends on what environmental stresses are present from one generation to the next.
