Fractions of WHAT? An ounce? A pound?

Anyhow, a big tip is to sort of pretend that units are numbers, and see that they cancel.

For example, if you multiply 454 grams/pound by 10 pounds,

the pounds units "cancel", and the answer is in terms of grams (namely 4,540). Multiply that by 1/1000 gram/kilogram, and now the grams term "cancels", and the answer is 4.54 kilograms.

So 10 pounds = 4.54 kilograms, if I remembered my conversion factor correctly.

All you'd have to do is take the number of digits you want to represent as a fraction and put it over the same power of 10 as there are digits, then add that to 3. Reduce the fraction, make it a mixed number, and you're done. There's no "formula" to find this - other than the above algorithm - because since the digits of π follow no pattern, neither would partial representations of it via rationals. Edit: 22/7 ≠ π π is irrational.
