Financially, it wasn't a mistake, if for no other reason than the $10 million in guaranteed money, plus escalators.
Will he break into the majors? Hard to believe he won't with that kind of investment in him. To his credit, he's trying to expand his pitching arsenal. His numbers suck, but that's not uncommon.
I don't think he'll be in the NFL. The longer he's away, the less likely he'll have the need or desire to play. He'd be a #3 or #4 if he were to return, and the money simply isn't there...

I'm not sure he had NFL speed at wide receiver but he definately had the height. As for it possibly being a mistake signing with the Cubs, I don't think it was a mistake at all. With some good coaching, his pitching can improve a lot and he could have a much longer career as a pitcher.

Jeff Samardzija got a total of 12.5 million dollars from the Cubs and would not have come close to making that in the NFL. He went where the money was.

I thought it was a dumb move. He'd have been a 2nd round pick - 3rd at the worst in the NFL. Now he's playing in obscurity.
It would be easier to be a bust in the NFL and then switch to baseball if it didn't work out. It won't work the other way though. Too bad, he could have been good.

He made a great decision. He would never be anything better then a 3rd or 4th reciever in the NFL and he is still on pace to be in the majors by 2009.

I havent really followed his baseball career but thanks for the info.
I always thought I would have liked to see him bulk up and play as a tight end in the NFL. The guy has great hands and runs great routs but lacks the speed at wide reciever.

he reminds me of drew henson. he was with the yankees but he was still drafted by the houston texans who then traded him to dallas where he never amounted to anything. jeff could eventually come to the nfl in another season or two if he sees he just can't make it in the bigs.

Baseball pays better, they have guaranteed contracts and you don't get the **** beat out of you on every play. Anybody that can play either sport and chooses football first is crazy.
