The county has been sending threatening letters that they will come pick me up and tow me away to the jailhouse if I don't go pay my library fine of $18.57. They don't seem to understand, I don't have that kind of money. *sigh*

Well, on the bright side, I have been wanting to see my ex-boyfriend again...

Why don't you just pay the fine and be responsible? Public libraries provide a service and are funded by taxpayer money, plus whatever fines people rack up... The library is usually free if you follow the rules, which you obviously didn't. I don't know if you lost a book or just turned them in late, but you should pay what you owe. I'm sure you can cough up the $19, even if it means you stay in one weekend or penny pinch until you have the extra money. It's really not that much. If you can afford to have a cell phone, you can afford a $20 fine.

First of all, that is insane. I'm not sure if they can or not. I worked at a library for 6 months and we did not send anyone to jail. Which State do you live in? I live in FL so it may differ from state to state. I'd check with your courthouse and talk to them about it. It is a fine, the most they would do (so i'm thinking) is take away your library privillages and barr you from the system. We had people that had fees of $300 in our system. We just didn't allow them to have library accounts ever again -- until they repaid -- if ever.

Not where I live. It's more based on morals. They keep adding to your fine, but if you really didn't have the money and all, I would go and talk to them. Explain your situation. If you can't afford their $18 fee, then they'll know you've got bigger problems. Public libraries are usually fairly understanding, maybe you can work something out. Good luck!

Unless your ex-boyfriend is a guard in the jail, you won't be seeing him. I suggest you return the book to the library and while you're there, pay the fine. If you don't have it ask your parents and if you're over 18 they can come after you. Try getting a part-time job and paying it. It is stupid to ruin your credit history over something so lame.

Simple answer is NO absolutely not ... Ignore the letters and have a laugh someday over them.. But in the mean time pay that 18.00 as this will effect your credit rating down the road.. Maybe you have a friend or parent who could help you keep your credit standing...

well, thats one way to have a good ending, lol maybe you can get a couple more boyfriends and have a real fun time, but i would just pay the money and be done with it, but i dont think you can be put in jail for a fine at the library

LOL, that's too funny. Here in my city they CAN take you to jail because the library is attached to the city, so it's like not paying a parking ticket....after some time they will come and get you.

I doubt they would take you to jail for a library fine. In any event they must file a criminal or civil case and go to court first.

No, but they can send bill collectors after you who may or may not be able to drag you into Court and establish garnishment of any wages you may receive to cover the fine you owe.

set up a payment arrangement with the library? pay small if you cant come up with all the money at once.... Or see if family and friends can help you out.
