I just bought a 1987 GMC suburban 350 4x4 automatic as a project truck but the instrument panel dosen't work the lights come on but the gauges don't work. the spoeedometer and odometer do nothing, while the others sometimes float, but mainly do nothin, i checked fuses and grounds and every thing looked ok.i also checked the wheel speed sonsor and it was fine. someone in the past has put a rather expensive stereo system in it and removed the amplifier would have something to do with it?

My guess is that something in the cluster circuit board is fried. The problem is that all of the gauges are basically "connected". Once any part of the board fries, none of the gauges will work. The lights will continue to work because they have a separate circuit. Pull the cluster and look at the board on the back for burnt traces. the traces on the '73-'87 cluster boards are very wide so burnt ones are easy to spot. If you're handy with electronics, you can usually fix them fairly easily, otherwise you can usually find used complete clusters on Ebay for under $50.

That's a tough one to help you with on this deal. You are going to need some type of wiring diagram for the inst. cluster. I didn't think they went full electronic until 1988, but I could be wrong. If someone was inside the dash farting around with installing a stereo system, there is a chance they tapped into the harness for the cluster. I would get in there and inspect first to see as it might have broken a wire that they spliced too and maybe a quick fix. You have to get in there anyways to test so it all has to come apart anyways.

worse case scenario is that the person who installed the stereo forgot to disconnect the battery beforehand and shorted out the instrument panel- permanently frying it. I accidentally did it on a truck i once had and lost all of my gauges but the lights continued to work

something is unplugged, the wiring harness that plugs into the gauge cluster panel is what i would check first, it might just be not plugged in,
