I wrote a check to pay my rent. Today I called my bank to check my balance and they said that i had a negative available balance and that the check will be returned tonight. How long will it take for my leasing office to be notified about the returned check. I have most of the money to pay the rent again, but not all of it, and i will have it next week.

I feel bad because this is the first time i had this happen to me, and I should have been more careful about checking my account balance and making sure i had all the money :-(

UPDATE:
After all of the great advice, I decide to take responsibility of my mistakes and called the leasing office. The lady was very nice. She told me that from now on I will have to pay my rent by money order. And that I will have to pay the rent amount, a $50 late fee, and $35 returned check fee by the 31st. She said if i needed to do partial payments until its fully paid, then i could. So today I gave her $200 and I will pay the rest next week.

If your leasing office checks their balance online, they will probably find out about it right away. If they are notified through the mail, it will probably take a few days.

I would contact your leasing office and tell them that you just noticed that the check you gave them bounced, and would like to give them a money order/cashier's check to replace the original check.

They will probably respond better to someone taking responsibility for their actions and trying to remedy the situation right away.

Also, be prepared to pay any associated fees. Check your lease for specifics.

Why wait till they find out through the bank?
Go talk to them now.
And this mistake is going to cost you. The bank will charge you then the leasing office will charge you for a return check and a late fee on the rent.
Good side to this is that almost everyone has learned this way, too! (they won't admit it though)

your leasing company will get to know next business day. I would recommend that before they come to know, call them and let aware them it happened by mistake and you be paying next week.
Also be ready to deposit so much money to cover the overdraft fee to prevent urself being negative account balance again.
For future, do online banking so you dont need to hassle to call ur bank to find out abt balance. You can check online and do ur transaction accordingly.
Good Luck!
