"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it--by reading his books. You can find reviews of the book and a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

"Discovery of Heaven" by Mulisch is quite good. But maybe a bit too heavy for older teens. They dig the subject though.

"The Notebook" and "The Wedding" by Nicholas Sparks and "The Last Summer of You and Me" by Anne Brashares, if you like tear jerker romances. If you like myster/thrillers than a great book to read is "First to Die" by James Patterson.
