I have been to the Disney parks before in the past. My mom passed away this summer, and my kids and I need to get away for the holiday. A part of me does not want to go, but I know I have to do this for my kids. I have suffered so much and I am still grieving over my mom. What suggestions do you have?

If you buy a Go-Orlando card, it is good for admission and discounts to 54 different attractions in the Orlando area. (link below) Also, you might want to check with Craigs List under "events".

besides Disney World (which also included MGM, EPCOT and more, apart from the Magic Kingdom=Disney Land original park), there are also other amusement parts (as Universal Studios), Sea World and more. Also, a 1 day trip to Cape Kennedy (NASA center) would be nice. From There I would also drive south along the coast to Fort Lawderdale (a full day drive, might stay there overnight too). If you got more time continue to Miami and the keys, tour Everglades Park (2 days) or take a cruise (3-4 days to Bahamas) - not too expensive these days and very relaxing.Enjoy.

Within a two hour drive of Orlando (or, Kissime/St/ Cloud) is almost anything you could want. Try going to the Orlando Tourism site.

My condolences on the loss of your Mother...I lost my father eighteen months ago. I hope you and the kids can recover quickly, and will treasure the memories forever.

There are several things near by. Like Daytona, there is a good Museum there with a planetarium, there is a lot near Orlando but most everything is Disney related.

in this situation there is nothing better for you and your kids than visit SEA WORLD and BUSH GARDENS in Tampa - the animals always have a different influence on humans.
You could try swimming with the dolphins (sea world) and take a trip to the giraffes (bush gardens) - It's a different kind of communication - they feel and understand better.

There are some nice resorts in Florida.
you can go fishing, you can go camping, you can go sight seeing and see historic places. There's a lot of things to do you just have to do a little research.
