Politically, self-determination in government was probably the biggest issue during those years. These were the years of the American and French revolutions which were all about eliminating arbitrary governmental control of nations

Economically, the world was BEGINNING to see that trade was going to trump, if not eliminate and sometimes cause, war. Even though business and money interests still caused their fair share of conflict, the global economy began to have a somewhat dampening effect on arbitrary war because many times war ruins an economy rather than helping it.
