you could try flipping their pessimism by pointing out the up side of whatever it is they are complaining about. or you could completely ignore the pessimistic comments and pounce on the optimism by rewarding everything they say that is optimistic. eventually, most people start to do more of what they are rewarded for and less of what gets them NO attention (this is the beauty of positive reinforcement). good luck!

.... that's not the type of thing that just changes. You'd be better of and much happier just accepting him/her for who they are and relish in the fact that you, as an optimist, are probably the brightest part of their day.

Just keep pointing out the good stuff and express how you feel to him!
maybe he doesn't know he is being this way or if he is then you can ask him not to do it around you so much!
