Everything depends on your area - east, west, north or south of the river - that kind of thing, and how far out you want to be. Do you want a flat or a house - something modern or traditional: all these variables help to confuse the mix. The best place to look for prices is www.netprices.com which has recent sales from the land registry. This should give you some idea of how far (or not) your money will go. The biggest decision is choosing the right area (to paraphrase Conrad Hilton).

Almost nothing in the centre, an estate agent near us advertises 2 bed apartments for 500/600k, i would suggest outskirts of town. Disgusting isn't it, no wonder people can't get on the property ladder.

A smallish semi in outer London with a bit of luck. A small flat maybe elsewhere.

A small flat, very small and most likely not on the west side. Probably have to go a little out of town or the west side and commute.
