The simple answer would be to divert attention away from something else. In practice this is not so simple. The audience is smart (at least in my experience in theater in the round). Normally I can only see this being done to change set, to divert the attention from that. The point of a play is to tell a story, so I don't know why one would want to divert the audience away from that. I suppose you could use it to change the focus of the story to keep the audience guessing. So the effects can range, depending on what your goal is. I am not an expert, just a lowly performer on the stage of community theater.
