there are different ways to get internet to a laptop.
One Way - if you already have internet at home, either dial-up or DSL, you can physically connect the phone line or the network cable from your cable modem that usually connects to a PC and just plug it into your laptop and connect like you would on your desktop PC. it doesnt cost you a penny more than what you are already paying, although you would still only have internet on only the PC the cable is connected to
Way 2 - you can get a wireless network setup and that way you have have your desktop PC connected like normal, and if your laptop has wifi capabilities, it will automatically pick up the signal from the wireless router and connect you to the network. if you need more help on how to set up a wireless network, just ask any of the fine people here on yahoo answers, or search the questions as that is actually a popular one. for a wireless network, dial-up will not work. you need at least a cable modem.
costs for way 2 vary. if you have your ISP professionally install it, then they would tell you how much. if you didnt have dsl before then the upgrade would cost you, however much your ISP charges you for the type of service (usually 30+ a month). if you want to install it yourself, then the cost of equipment depends on the equipment you buy. you would need a wireless router, which can cost anywhere from 30-80 dollars, depending on brands and sales. if you want your desktop PC to be wireless as well, you would need either a wireless flash drive or a wireless PCI adapter, which are pretty cheap (can be under 20 dollars). if your laptop doesnt have wireless capabilities, you would need a wireless card for that as well, which are around the same price as the flash drive or PCI adapter.

You need a ISP (Internet Service Provider) first of all. Second, you need to get a modem, either from your ISP or on your own which you hoook up to your laptop, and/or a router (wired or wireless) depending on your needs, especialy if you plan to use more than one computer for internet activities.
There are many brands of routers out there, I suggest going to a best buy or circuit city and talking to one of the techs there to help you decide the best router for your needs. Then you have to install all the drivers and junk that come with the router and modem, which your ISP should be able to help you with, you might need to call tech support for that. And then you are pretty much done.
There is a whole bunch of small stuff that you need to configure ..but your ISP tech support should be able to take you through that step-by-step.

do u mean mobile internet that u can take around or just internet for ur home? for portable internet u can go with a service provider like verizon that gives u an aircard u can plug into ur laptop... u would pay like 200 for the card and %60 a month for the internet. its pretty pricey. or if u just need internet for home u can either plug it into your modem and just like aol or high speed... depending on how much u wanna pay. u can go wireless and just surf on free internet areas. u need a wireless card either built in or added on... theyre like $40 for laptops.
