I have a florescent light on my fish tank and I believe it to be too bright due to the fact that when I turn it on the fish hide in the plants and under rocks.
Need Possible Solutions.
Do florescent lights come in different intensities or watts?
Any other ideas?

Usually when you turn on the lights, the fish are startled just like when someone sudden turns on a flashlight on you in the middle of the night. If you have dimmer in that room, it would help by slowly brighting the room and tank.

Also it depends on what kind of fish you have too. Neon tetras, glass fish, and etc. don't like too much light and would hide. Nocturnal fishes sleep during the day and is active during the night.

Low lighting is under 1 watt per gallon
Moderate is 1 - 2 watts per gallon and
High is over 2 watts per gallon.

So get a dimmer and check what kind of fish you have and see if the lighting is okay for your fishes.

Try turning on the room lights first,so the transition is more gradual, what your seeing is their reaction to going from dark to bright, and can actually induce shock in some species. The brightness of the light is not the problem,it's the suddenness.
