If financial issues are a concern, then you should go through University Hospital. It serves as both a teaching facility for the UTHSCSA and covers San Antonio and Bexar County as the city/county hospital. They will work out a schedule for payments based on your ability to pay.

Many of the other hospital systems will also work with the patients to help provide the needed services, while not overtasking the patient financially. Speak with the doctor who would be admitting you.

If the issue is where to be seen initially, I would contact the University Health System, they have outpatient clinics throughout the metropolitan area, and the hospital to meet the needs of the Bexar County residents. If you live outside Bexar County, contact the county hospital for your county, or the county health department for a referral.

EDIT: I am working on the assumption that you either do not have, or have inadequate health insurance. Some responses indicate any hospital will admit a patient on a payment schedule basis, this is always not the case. All hospitals do not have to accept a patient if they are unable to show the ability to pay, ie insurance with coverage for the admitting diagnosis. All hospitals do have the obligation to accept emergency patients, if they have an emergency room, and to stabilize the patient. Patients without insurance are normally cared for by the closest not-for-profit hospital. In San Antonio the University Hospital receives funding from the county to cover the expenses of county residents who cannot pay for care, they are then given a payment plan based on their ability to pay. While other hospitals can and usually will work with patients to resolve financial issues, they do not have to admit patients for non-emergency procedures if they are not insured, and they can use a collection agency or any and all legal means to collect funds, including placing leins on property and garnishment of wages if approved by the court. Frequently, before a patient is seen, an esitmate of charges is made, and prior to care, if insurance is inadequate, and the cost is prohibitive, the hospital requires a deposit, prior to providing non emergent/stabilizing care.

The Baptist Health System, the Methodist Hospital System and Southwest General as well as the smaller specialty hospitals are all owned by healthcare corporations and are businesses, and not charitable organizations. They provide a wonderful service, and frequently provide care for which they do not collect, but that is not the same as the care provided to county residents through the University/Bexar County System.

I go where my insurance takes me and I make payments. My boys have been in the hospital on many, many, many occasions, too many to count as they have more than their share of illnesses since the death of their dad. But, they always take my money and don't bug me because they know I pay and my insurance covers all but my deductable which is $500 per family per year or $250 per person per year which still confuses me if we are a family of 4.

Any hospital has to treat you regardless of your ability to pay. It's federal law. Once you get well,THEN you start making payments, lol.
