Both - as with most things that we are.

Nature = there is a lot of evidence to show that humans are competitive from birth. And this is, of course, the way of evolution. The need to survive.

Nurture = in some cultures the need to compete is emphasised much more than others. Cultures like the USA are very competitive and thus the people in it become much more so. Where Sweden and others place much more on cooperation.

"Com-petitio" is "with prayer, with petition." Hence, there is healthy competition, in which teammates, runners in a race, strive to do their level best, i.e., without doing harm to another, etc. That is both primarily natural and secondarily nurturing, for what one is doing, another may learn, given equal levels of ability.

"Climb the Highest Mountain," Mark Prophet, discusses this indirectly; "Expecting Adam," Martha Beck, Ph.D., is hilarious at times as she describes earning her Ph.D. at Harvard while carrying her unborn baby to term.
