How do u think that will work out if the San Francisco 49ers would go out and trade Alex Smith there QB for a veteran? Do u think that is what the 49ers need?

I don't think Alex Smith is the problem.

Health has been #1. Gore, Davis, Jackson, Smith, all injured much of the season.

Couple that with a patchwork offensive line, and no QB will succeed.

They do need a legitimate veteran QB on the roster, but kicking Smith out won't solve anything. Now, if McNabb wanted to come out west, maybe I'd change my mind... but I would still keep Smith if possible.

From the article below, Alex Smith is not doing anyone on the 49ers any favors. He's called out his head coach for discrediting him in front of his teammates. I'm not sure how Smith will gain the confidence of his teammates and coaches after going public with his dissatisfaction of how the team handled his injury.

If Smith can regain the confidence of the team, he'll stay with the 49ers and start next season. The team has invested too much on him. Plus the crop of unrestricted free agent QB's is pretty sorry. Rex Grossman, Cleo Lemon, any of the Oakland QB's, etc... I know the Browns have a surplus of QB's. Derek Anderson will be a restricted free agent, but I don't know if the 49ers want to offer him a huge contract that the Browns can't match. Without a first round pick, it will be difficult to trade for a young quality QB like Brady Quinn.

I think you're see the 49ers sign a veteran past-his-prime "I still believe I'm a starting" QB like Brian Griese or Chad Pennington to compete with Alex Smith. The 49ers have a bunch of problems to figure out like improving OL play, generating a pass rush, getting better WR's, and figuring out how to use TE Vernon Davis before we label him a draft bust.

Do you realize how screwed their salary cap situation would be if they did that? He was a first round pick. He is going to be fine, last year was the abberition the 49ers were not as good as everyone thought they were last year and when your record improves the league deals you a tougher schedule so many teams backslide during the year that people think that they are going to cash it in.

The problem is if you start over again, you are basically punting for the next five years because you can be sure that the coach won't survive the next rebuild then there will be a whole new philosophy and you will just keep spinning your wheels. Many people thought that Romeo Crennel would/should have been fired after last season but the Browns knew that starting over is like a four year minimum process and it had already been 6 years since they made the playoffs. Sometimes you need to just take your lumps for a minute and see these things through.

Without a stellar QB available after the 1st round, I think they should hold on to him for another year or so and build the rest of the team around him. Veteran QB's available are usually not spectacular enough to make enough of a difference, I'd build up the lines on both sides of the ball and maybe if they don't trade their 1st round pick this year, they can get a decent QB in the future.

1st round QB's are scary though, there are tons of busts:
David Carr, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, etc....

Sucks to be him really.

3 offensive coordinators in 3 years.

No receivers what so ever.

The coaching staff tries to ignore both Davis and Gore their only talented players.

O-line can't stop anyone from pressuring him.

The whole offensive sucks and that's not his fault its the team's fault.

They need....
1) new owner/president/GM
2) Demote their head coach down to d-coordinator since that's all he knows
3) bring Norv back
4) hire an experienced head coach,
5) find a couple of receivers that can cath the f'in ball.

then Smith will look like a serviceable pro QB but not a world beater.

Alright.... I have been one of those people who was saying he has to go... and I am not even a 49ers fan. He has just been so inconsistent his whole career. But tonight, he looked GREAT! It looks like he is gonna prove me wrong. Another "but" ..... we have to wait to see what he does next week. After all, he struggles with consistency. He has to be able to put a string of good games together instead of showing signs of being a good qb one day and a bust the next. Overall, I was MORE THAN IMPRESSED with his play tonight.

I think Smith will be a bust. Although he's shown the occasional bit of good play, he's extremely inconsistent. I just don't think that he mentally has what it takes to be a good NFL QB. He doesn't seem to take control of anything.

The whole team sucks and you think the QB is the problem?

They need an overhaul of the offensive line and some receivers.

I don't think there is any one thing the 9ers could do that would "fix" the mess. Getting rid of Smith is just one step in the right direction.
