Well I learned Aikido and we were trained to defend against multiple attackers. whether i could pull it off now is a different matter. guess i would whack them with my walking stick

- Run as fast as you can
- Take out the leader and hope the others will back off
- Take out the first one you can and get them in a hold and tell the others to back off or you will break something (fingers, etc)
- Try and get into a situation where they can only attck you one by one eg doorway stair well

speaking form hard experience.
its not like the movies. multipul attackers will without exception, will over welm you fast if they are dedicated to their action.
your only chance is to down the leader immediately and hope the others will back off. ( not to likely though).. your best defence is retreat since most use weapons these days.
my combat instructor was the man that trained me to 5th drgree level. he once said this in answer to my question about if i'm attacked by someone or a group e with a knife:
if someone attacks me with a knife they will have to cut me in the **** cause that is all they will see as i run away.
he went on to say if you cant run do your best to fight past the attackers then run like hell.
if you cant do that good luck

I still remember the line from one of the Karate Kid movies, "The best defense is not to be there." Avoid the situation and you'll be safer. Don't go places alone at night, avoid areas known to have higher crime rates, general common sense things.
Or you could take the attitude of Marine Corps General "Chesty" (because of all his award ribbons on the chest of his uniform) Puller. When he and his men were surrounded in battle and it looked hopeless to everyone else he said, "Good. We've got them where we want them. Now it doesn't matter where we shoot, we'll hit the enemy." They prevailed in that battle because of his attitude.

I don't see how you can defend yourself effectively in this situation. The best thing would be to avoid this and pray you are never in this situation. Prevention is better than cure.
