algebra is a field of mathematics, one that deals with the manipulation of variables. Along with geometry, analysis, combinatorics, and number theory, it is one of the main branches of mathematics

2+2 is general math.
2x+4=10 is algebra

the "x" in this equation represents the variable. You have to manipulate the equation in order to figure out the value of x. in general math, it is straightforward, 2+2=4. For Algebra, you have to isolate the x, which in this case, the answer to that algebra question is x=3

Mathematics is the science of numbers.

Whereas Algebra is a branch of Mathematics that we use to find the unknowns in a given question. When you assign variables to find the unknowns, that is where Algebra comes in.

Everyone is right so far -- the way I look at it is ---
Algebra is a subset of Math
A square is a rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares.
Algebra is Math, but not all math is algebra.

Math is much bigger that the field of algebra.
