Aren't there really only two varieties of religion: humane and inhumane?

Well, in the humane category we can place Buddhism, Unitarianism, and maybe some varieties of Judaism, Jainism and Hinduism.
Then you have the inhumane religions of war: Christianity and Islam.

No, every religion would claim to be humane. I do not think you can really categorize religion

No there is only one variety - superstition.
