If you can live without knowing--I would say move on. In the realm of life--does this matter. Depending how much the truth means to you--I guess.

You should dog him until he tells the tail fur this is the only way you will learn the truth. Let him know he is barking up the wrong tree if he thinks you are going to let him get away with just scratching the surface of the story. If he fleas, you will have to catch him right away but don't let him brush you off.

You know what they say, "Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas." Itch up to you what to do. Maybe you should paws and spay some time thinking about it. Neuter or later you'll come up with a solution.
