does it give us hope that the Americans will stop this terrible injustice of detention without trial?

what's with the 'there were no British there' comments? 5 of them were freed last week - it was in all the papers that they were coming home at last!!

for goodness' sake. here's a link. Obviously this won't have been reported in America cos they don't want you to know you are detaining allies!

Let's certainly hope so. The international pressure on the US is definately building.

And it shouldn't matter what nationality any of those freed or still incarcerated are. Torture and detention without trial are totally unacceptable under any, any, circumstances.

Well actually those would be two different numbers. There has never been a single report of abuse at Guantanmo Bay except those made by prisoners, and that includes the multiple visits by U.S. Senators (including Democratic ones),and the Red Cross Don't you think that the red cross who administer medical help would notice if those being treated had been abused? It's also a P.O.W. camp. everyone in Guantanamo bay was captured on the battle field. Turn Off C.N.N,and do some research for yourself

The only thing I can find about British prisoners at Guantanamo bay is an article about the last 4 being released in 2005- with the British government taking full responsibility for them.
The names did sound very British either, i might add.

If you have done something so questionable as to end up in Guantanamo, I have no doubt you deserve to be there. the 3000 people dead on 9/11 had no trial before they were executed- I guess that is just the justice of the East.

There's an article from August about the last 5- these guy have some pretty weird names- wonder if they are related to the people that tried to blow up that airport in London?

No,they'll just go underground.

SPORREGAR - That is an outrageous assumption.Did you have your head buried in the sand during the internment without trial of thousands in Northern Ireland! Read a book man!!!!!!!

Going further back you might want to research 'The Black and Tans'. The British recruited early released criminals and took mental patients from asylums and sent them to subdue and intimidate the native Irish.Indeed it was state sponsored terrorism.

I hope so.
By all means detain them, but they are human beings and should be entitled to be given a fair trial in the west's so called civilised society. If they're found guilty than lock them up, but to hold them for so long without a trial is disgraceful.

Not while Bush is in power. I follow Q&A on the US site and boy do the Libs and Cons hate each other there. All the time the neo-cons have the balance of power things will continue as they are, they don't go in for self criticism, they're not going to admit they do injustice.

News to me that there were any British held at Guantanamo.

And I'm sure that GB has never held anyone without trial or any other immoral thing when fighting terrorism.

None of them are actually British. So why are we worrying about people with a serious question mark hanging over them?

This has got to be one of the most ignorant questions ever posted here. There were no British hostages, and there is no concentration camp. Your pathetic attempt at propaganda is seen through so easily, you should be ashamed of yourself. Your misleading assertions don't make them true, and anyone with any sense at all recognizes your bias. The sad thing is if you were to fall into the hands of these "hostages", when they were finished using you, they would cut your head off, and you don't even realize that. It's not a warm-fuzzy world out there. Wake up and smell the coffee.
