Just to kill bad information - The statue of Liberty is a woman and was given to the U.S. in honor of our Centennial. Because fundraising lagged, it wasn't actually installed until 10 years later, in 1886. It was put up to have the largest population (which we have never had), but is called Liberty Illuminating the World. France had a revolution shorly after ours. Theirs was a lot messier than ours as monarchy and democracy sloshed back and forth.
