As a microbiologist, I will tell you that the embryonic stem cell debate is NOT as important as it once was. There have been at least two labs, one in US and one Japan, that have been able to manipulate already differentiated cells to revert them back to functional stem cells. With further research, I feel we will soon be able to put to rest the ethical debate over embryonic stem cells, and focus on actually being able to save peoples lives. So in that, I feel that candidates OTHER platforms are more important to our direct future.

That the complete lack of medical advances outweighs the need for research.

We say "OK, so if we give you funding we will cure diabetes? Parkinson's?"

They say "Um... maybe... not sure...."

So we ask scientists, they say "Not a chance in hell... there have been no advances and the research is yielding no results."

Stem cell research is good.... embryonic stem cell research is bad.
