Are you okay with our enemies torturing OUR soldiers?

Turnabout is fair play, isn't it? If we think it's okay to torture OUR prisoners, shouldn't we also think it's okay for our enemies to torture the men and women of our military?

Angel of Death: I didn't ask whether they DO. I asked whether you think it's okay.

Wow. A lot of you clearly can't read. Again... I didn't ask whether they DO... I asked HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT IT. You must think it's okay. Which then begs the question... how can you say you support our military???

donthate: Actually, I hold Americans to a higher standard of behavior than the rest of the world. Those attempted murderers supposedly represent our flag. It's disgusting.

As a strong Bush supporter, I am against torture. I'm retired military and a combat vet.. I don't trust the info gained under those conditions. Given enough pain, people will say just about anything to make it stop.

Of course nobody wants our soldiers tortured as I'm sure enemy soldiers don't want their soldiers tortured. But do you honestly believe that just because won't torture any captive enemy combatants, that it would stop them from doing it? I hardly believe that. Today is a different time. We are not a nation-state fighting another nation-state. We are a nation-state fighting a fragmented group without ties to any one particular country. They are fighting on behalf of a twisted ideology. It's not as if we can go in, defeat them, and all the violence will discontinue. They do not follow tradional rules of war. This war needs to be won a different way than any other we've fought. Not to mention, the Geneva Accords say that we must treat enemy combatants that wear the uniform of another nation humanely. I'm sure Al-Qaeda has never signed any agreement saying they would do the same. Besides, water-boarding if anything, is certainly not torture.

The Geneva Conventions prohibit even the QUESTIONING of captured soldiers - POWs.

I think we should abide by the Conventions, as signed.

Enemy combatants are not covered, and making them feel uncomfortable with waterboarding, sleep deprivation and temperature controls doesn't bother me a bit.

We're at war. We need to protect ourselves.

Again, your reference to "our soldiers" has nothing to do with this conversation.

PS I'm not trying to be flippant, but to be honest any "harsh treatment" our military has meted out to enemy combatants is probably much gentler than the average Three Stooges short. To use the term "torture" in this context is to render it virtually devoid of meaning.

I wish people were more concerned about defeating these people than in coddling them. I really do.

It leads one to ask "whose side are people on?"

PPS People TRULY concerned about human rights should focus their efforts on combating the REAL torture. Read about the people who so many here want to defend:

Well considering American soldiers have undoubtedly been tortured in every war this side of WWI, then I think that pehaps its time to start that turnabout, n'est pas? Our enemies are not about to treat us nicely and they will not abide by the same rules of engagement that we abide by. I'm not saying that I'm for torture, but you can't complain about the results.

No. Torture sucks. All of it. Human beings everywhere are f'n sick and moronic to do such things to other human beings. We are the only animal species who would purposely torture another of our species for non-instinctual reasons. We've used our "intelligence" to invent sick new ways to cause others pain. We are so wonderful.

"Which then begs the question... how can you say you support our military???"

Oh, don't you know they reason that those who sign up for the military should see such things as torture *coming*? It's part of the JOB. Yeah, right.

The fact that you call our troops murderers is disgusting. They are dying everyday for your right to call them that. I will thank them for you.

Our troops are being tortured everyday and have been for many years.

I don't agree with terrorists flying planes into our buildings in the name of Allah. Do You?

I know you're not deficient in the operation of those grey cells, so what is it?

Very sad when another tragedy like 9/11 looms as the only agent of edification; the fundies declared war on us, and one of their chief techniques is the lopping of heads--not for intell purposes, but for the sheer savagery of it.

Yea but then we get into that issue with them doing things like cutting heads off. So far I dont know that the US military has cut anyones head off or any of that kinda thing.
Since they do it should it be fair for the US to do it?

They already torture our Military right before they cut their heads off. The Geneva Convention does not apply to enemy combatants.

They already do and it's not waterboarding. Do you think that they actually follow the Geneva convention. That is why we train for it. I can agree with turn about is fair play, if they waterboard me I will consent to it. If we are going with turn about being fair play, then we should be able to hook them up to a cattle-prod like they do us. Or to a bed spring an apply the juice, or did you think that only happens in the movie.
