My daughter asked me yesterday and I wasn't able to answer. Logically, shouldn't it go slower since it has trouble sucking up air?

Air causes friction, when you block airflow no friction is present so the motor in the vacuum speeds up.

What makes you think it goes faster? Maybe it is just struggling since you blocked the air.
