I recently got a wireless system so I can run both my laptop and desktop off the same system. The problem has become that when I cut off the desktop computer my wireless doesn't want to work anymore? The desktop is what the wireless was set up through though. Does anyone have any idea why this would happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just set up everything as the box said don't really see why this would happen. Any suggestions let me know.

i understand your point, but don't get that I thought that once I had the wireless route hooked up I didnt realize it still required the main computer on to work. I thought it would work on its own. IS there anyway to change so that it would work on its own without the desktop on or no?

I guess when i first signed up for internet they asked me if it would be wireless or non-wireless and at first it was not wireless but now that I have the router i attempted to hook the old highspeed up to Wireless which has worked but still requires my main computer on. Any ideas there? I mean the router connects to the other system that was originally given to me by the cable company.

Well your setup should be like this
Cable Modem ----> Router -----> Comptuers
IF the connection shuts off when the PC is off then something is not configured correctly. I would say try this
1. Turn off Cable Modem, router, and computers
2. Turn on Cable Modem, wait till it shows connection.
3. Turn on Router, wait for all lights to settle down (about 1 - 2 minutes.
4. Turn on computer 1. Check connectivity
5. See if you can connect wirelessly to router.
6. Turn off main computer see if still connected .
If you aren't then you need to log into the router and check to see WHAT MAC address is set. Then "CLONE" the MAC address from the main computer into it! (This is an available setting from within the routers setup) Some cable companies set your modem to only respond to the MAC address that is first connected. (In this case your computers) Just put that address into the router. (You can see this address from "nework connections -- support in the control panel.)
Once the address has been cloned into the router you will be able to turn off the main PC and your laptop will work without that machine being turned on.

If all that fails, contact the cable company to get the circuit reset so that the router is seen first!

Merry Christmas and God Bless

Are you using a router to braodcast the signal? Or is the desktop acting as a adhoc access point with Internet Connection Sharing enabled? If the choice is the latter, then once the desktop is powered off then the access point is down.

because your network configurations are in desktop you are facing this problem...
simple logic buddy
When you are in connected in wireless, the wireless system searches for the server for participation in network...since you have turned off your server(not server exactly but the machine containg your n/w configurations) your wireless laptop will not recieve any permission to act in network..hence your wirless is not working..
