It happened to me this morning when i sent an E-mail to my daughter. I received a notice of stop notice because of content.

the NSA has filters setup with most ISPs that search for phrases that could be a lead as to a possible terror threat.. so be careful what you say.. words that trigger their alerts are probably things like: bomb, infidel, Allah, etc..

The potential exists, however due to the amount of traffic and the urgency to screen certain types of it, I doubt all of it is analyzed, and even less so by a human operator. Realistically, if these people who look at this stuff are doing their job they don't have enough time to track down individuals and read their emails unless it concerns national security.

Monitored by whom? The CIA? I don't think so. You'd have to be in contact with someone on the suspected terrorist list, whether they are in the USA or outside the USA.

Other than Qwest (who refused to give the government full access to their data streams)... all communications across the US are being captured
So you're only safe if you can figure out a way to only communicate over qwest routers ... good luck with that :P
