.... the newest trend seems to be the release of covers albums where artists record songs that influenced them in their journeys. Well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. If you were a musician and were recording a 12 song disc of nothing but covers to pay homage to your influences, what 12 songs would you chose?

Mine:
Dreams in the Dark (Badlands)
Panama (Van Halen)
Rocket Queen (Guns N' Roses)
Take Me (Kiss)
Too Young to Fall in Love (Motley Crue)
Season of Wither (Aerosmith)
I've Just Seen a Face (The Beatles)
Love Man (Otis Redding)
One Night of Sin (Elvis Presley)
Missing You (John Waite)
When You Close Your Eyes (Night Ranger)
A Country Boy Can Survive (Hank Williams Jr.)

Yeah... it took me a while to get this question posted because I had to work on my list. It started out at somewhere around 30 or so.

RQ - Yep... I saw the "world premier" video for "Jungle" back in '87 on Headbanger's Ball. The next day, I went out and bought Appetite. That's when I discovered the "sleaze" in rock.

Darth - I can certainly see where a keyboardist would be inspired by Jon Lord. That organ solo in "Burn" is just a monster... one of the best ever. I'll encourage you to check out the 1st Hughes Turner Project album. It may be a little pricey as an import, but it's loaded with classic 70s guitar and organ riffs with vocals from Hughes and Turner, and some guest guitar work from John Sykes.

Bowzer... welcome back to class. You missed an exam yesterday. I, as well as the rest of the class, was very disappointed.

(These are the songs which I think would be the most fulfilling, or fun, to cover. Not necessarily the best, most famous, or most significant, work of the named artist. OK, I'm done.)

Tracks Of My Tears - Smokey Robinson
Can Your Pussy Do The Dog - The Cramps
Pale Blue Eyes - The Velvet Underground
Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan
Misguided Angel - Cowboy Junkies
That Day Is Done - Elvis Costello
Ruby's Arms - Tom Waits
Some Candy Talking / I Hate Rock & Roll / Kill Surf City - The Jesus & Mary Chain
Quicksand / Width Of A Circle - David Bowie
For No-One - The Beatles
Everything Merges With The Night - Brian Eno
Georgia On My Mind - Ray Charles

LOL, you know, 12 songs is too few : )

EDIT: *Gives apple apologetically to teacher, and slinks to desk, tail between legs*

Good Morning Mike, interesting question.

It's kind of a mix of stuff for homage and songs I've always wanted to cover, but:

Billy Joel - Pressure
the Riverbottom Nightmare Band - Riverbottom Nightmare Band
Frank Black - So. Bay
Blur - Trimm Trabb
Elliott Smith - Christian Brothers
Folk Implosion - Waltzin With Your Ego
Pavement - Perfume V
Built To Spill - Big Dipper
Huey Lewis and the News - I Want A New Drug (a buddy of mine and I had a concept for it a long time ago to slow it way down and make it really spacey)
Elvis Costello - Kinder Murder
Grandaddy - Chartsengrafs
Nick Drake - Things Behind the Sun (I always thought that song would translate to a full band really well)

I know the way my brain works I could look at this in an hour and want to swap out like 4 of them, but at the moment...

****************
Man, there are some great lists.

I have a hidden track for it, Can - Thief. That song would be a lot of fun.
