The number three actually has a long time history of being a "magical" number. You'll see it (and multiples thereof) used in fairy tales all the time (i.e. Cinderella attends the ball three nights in a row, Sleeping Beauty had 12 good faeries attend her christening) Or how about the Holy Trinity or the Three Greek Fates?
