OMG...it's awesome...Ligeti is one of the greatest composers of the 20th century and one of my personal favorites....LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I don't think it is one of his best pieces, however. He created the piece to get a rise out of people, but he actually proved a point int he process...he did still create something amazing and showed real thought and imagination! To think that he was able to figure out an exact sequence that would create certain ticks coming together at certain specific times...its quite amazing. He really was pushing the boundaries of music and sound. For Ligeti fans....or anyone bad-a** enough to attempt to listen to him...if you haven't heard his piano concerto or his opera "le Grand Macabre"...they are both a MUST. The piano concerto is so complex and such a work of genius...words can't even describe it....utterly amazing work of art. The opera (which he actually calls his "anti-opera") is an incredibly dark and disturbing work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l09Pc45G0bI this clip is from the opera....its essentially a lesbian scene taking place during the apocolypse with a drunk guy and the anti-christ watching. So cool.

I heard it live a couple of years ago. The metronomes have to all stop on their own before the end of the piece. A couple of them just wouldn't quit after half an hour, so someone appeared on stage to silence them. I found that the most humorous and disappointing part.

I enjoy a great deal of Ligeti's works, and this is a nice experimental piece.

Grandissimo! Commovente.

This composer seems to be like John Cage: better at inventing gimmicks than composing music.
