The movie industry?
Seriously though,I guess it's just because no one knows for certain about the afterlife/death.

Honestly, I think the best answer to a question like this that I ever heard was on a recent episode of House. He described our fear of things like ghosts as an evolutionary artifact. For our ancestors there were two ways to react to glimpsing something out of the corner of your eye. One was to stand and try to investigate what it might be and the other was to run like bejezus. No one ever got eaten by running away, so we have been evolutionarily constructed to have our fight-or-flight response triggered by the slightest apparition of danger. The fantasy of ghosts has just been inserted as a way to explain a fear that the individual could not explain.

Just wait. Only two types of people see ghosts. Those that believe in them and those that don´t believe in them.

We are especially afraid the night, cause the night it's dark everywhere, and we see nothing, the world around us turns mysterious and unknown, even we know it very well in the day.
And those who are excessively afraid of it can "see" it by hallucination, cause spirit acts much.

it's the fact that we don't know that scares us.
Humans have always feared the unknown... once we know something.... well it loses most of it's fear factor.
