A person can develop depression, fear and other feelings of helplessness. Developing post-trumatic stress disorder is also common. A person's self-esteem can go down considerably as well.

I assume you mean the affects of the victim (not the rapist). The victim has a choice immediately...to let that moment define the rest of their life (before the rape, after the rape) or to put that horrible experience where it belongs...not at the top of any list. There are great defining moments in life, graduations, weddings, babies....those are the moments that are life-changing. The choice of a rape victim to forever recall that time as a 'defining moment' is up to them. I chose not to...it happened, like a car accident...and it was awful...but it wasn't the end of the world, or the beginning of a 'new damaged me'. It was simply something I'd rather forget and move on. Think of it like a broken bone, after a time of healing you can pretty much do everything you've ever done and more...but you're a little more protective and careful. Do not let it define you...that gives the rape/rapist too much power that it/they never deserve.

Sore vadge and paranoia.

Sorta like being forced to listen to Avril Lavigne's cover of Chop Suey!.... but through your genitals...
It messes with both your head and .... the parts it went in through. Some people choose to fix the problem while others just ignore it and compartmentalise it away for later.

if they don't deal with it (which almost always means see a counselor) then LOTS of psychological baggage... that gets harder to work through the longer they carry it.

If they DO deal with it then it's just like any other traumatic event.. once they have closure they lead a fairly normal life.... with a can of pepper spray and a shocker in their possession :P

Seriously though.. it is very VERY important for them to talk to the law and a counselor.
