The problem is Nortons is pure garbage. Perhaps you are not aware that Nortons, leaves over 375 fragments glued to your registry, files/folders and subsystem files.. When you go to add/remove you only think that you have removed Nortons.

Appears to me that you still have fragments of Nortons left in your system. And this will cause serious conflict with any new antivirus software you try to install, including updated Nortons.

I have been a beta tester for ten plus years for just about every antivirus/antispyware when I have spare time.

Have you taken all these steps to get all of Nortons/Symantec out of your system.

1. Go to your tray, open start open run and type in: c://program files and click on browse, click on program files and look to see if Nortons or Symantec is still there. If so delete if you can. (If file say "write protected", ctc. me via email and I will direct you to a free software that will delete a write protected file. Reboot and try again first, if Nortons will not delete. Shoud delete the second time.

2. Go to start, search and type in: Nortons and let your pc scan for all of Nortons files. Delete from top to bottom. (Any file that says is being used and will not detele, reboot and go back and try again to delete). Or ctc me. Go to start search and type in Symantec, let your pc search and delete all related files for Symantec from top to bottom on both.

3. If you consider yourself an expert in computer follow these steps to remove from your registry. If you don't consider yourself an expert I suggest that you don't mess with the registry. All you have to do is take out the wrong keys and you will have to reinstall your platform. (Here is the instructions, if you are sure you know what you are doing).

Go to start, run type in: regedit and click on "OK", and your registry will open. Open HKEY CURRENT USER, OPEN SOFTWARE, and look down the list of registry keys for Nortons and Symantec. Delete all associated and subsystem keys assocated with your registry.

Good Luck. I realized that you have already spent your money. Nortons is not only garbage, it is a resource hog, fails to find the majority of viruses. And if any are found only cleans 50% of the virus. You can download Avast free for home personal use that is light years ahead of Nortons. You get an excellent background scanner and on the hour updates daily. http://www.avast.com

Or you can make a one time purchase of $29.99 and use the antivirus I use and the Govt. Of Chia. You get technology that is light years ahead of any other know antiviurs program on the market for a one time fee for life. Includes daily auto updaes and all new versions for life. http://www.filseclab.com

Plus Visa approved.

Even when you un-install a program like norton it will leave certain file on your PC, this is to stop people downloading a trial version and then just removing and re-installing it once it has expired.
If you e-mail or better still call Norton's advise line and explain the situation then they will give you a key over the phone, they will first advise you on how to remove your existing one.
Once that one expires within the year I would seriously consider not using Norton any more. It is a large program and can slow your PC down as well as cost you every year.
There are free antivirus software out there which are just as good, I for example use the free AVG antivirus which updates regulary and have never had a problem. You can find out where to download if you search on Y! Answers for free AVG antivirus.

You will have to get on to their call centre, however, I used to have Norton, when I changed to (F SECURE) It kicked out all sorts of rubbish Norton had let in, I couldn't believe it.
