It isn't suprising because their records so far have been released on small local labels, but one of my top 5 favorite bands is a group called Franklin For Short. They are going to have a new record out in February and there is a lot of excitement about this maybe being the one that can propel them into some sort of success, but to date no one outside of the Ventura, CA area and maybe a bit of L.A. knows about them. They also put on a really great show. http://www.myspace.com/franklinforshort

You hear Okkervil River's name dropped maybe every now and again, but they are really great. They have a pretty cool rock and folk-y thing going on. A very cool sound.

Another one I don't get is a group out of Massachusettes called Apollo Sunshine. They have a kind of Pavement/Wilco thing with some classic rock influence. They're really interesting and their self titled album is really cool and has a lot of variation in types of songs. They have a great sound, and from what I hear, though I haven't caught it yet, they put on an amazing show.

Man, I hope that my assumption that Steve Simmons (above) is being sarcastic is correct.

I suppose while I'm at it I may as well plug my band. We've got two tracks up from a record that we're making and a couple older demos. I think we're pretty cool, but I suppose I would.

There is also a side project from the first band (Franklin For Short) that I mentioned. The bass player made a really cool folk record that I like. One of the tracks, Born Down By A Side, is really, really good. The rest is good as well, but that one is the song.

Way too many to name, both signed and independant. Corperate radio sux, and MTV is great if you like rap or bad reality shows. Sirius radio does way more for the less corperate music scene, they accually play what they want, not just whats approved. I'm in a signed band who has traveled and toured for 4 years straight, the local stations here are owed by a large national called Journal Broadcast and they will not play anything that is not corperate approved. It sux! We get airplay all over and nationally on Sirius, but not in our own city!

Mine is Widespread Panic. If you're not from the south, it's likely you've never heard of them, even though their following is similar to that of Phish and The Grateful Dead. They hold numerous records for attendance at a ton of venues all around the south, and their concerts are definitely worthy of remembrance. Birmingham rakes in the dough not only from the entertainment taxes, but also from the bail money of the several dozen that always get arrested. They are definitely not mainstream and I honestly hope they never are. ;)
