I got a violation this morning for a question I asked yesterday about needing help hanging Christmas lights on my house. The violation notice was for solicitation...whatever, solicitation for help maybe. What's wrong with that?

It's a solicitation if you ask for something, like "Can I have a hug? Star? 100 answers?" or "Can you rub my back? Help me do this, do that, vote for me?"

Most of the examples aren't anything that can be done, but even if they can, the community guidelines state that solicitation of any kind is against the community guidelines. This is what the community guidelines say: "Yahoo! Answers is a place to gain knowledge, not customers, page views, or dates. If you have years of experience in something, have a special hobby, own your own business, or if you are a knowledge partner, it's OK to accompany a good, on-topic answer with a link to your website, blog, or email to offer more information. However, it is not OK to post links that are unrelated to the topic or are clearly meant only to solicit others for personal and financial gain. Also prohibited are solicitations like "Will you add me as a contact?" or propositioning people."

Solicitation is defined in the FAQ section, under "What is considered solicitiation?": "Questions like “Wanna chat?” and “Who wants to grab coffee?” are solicitations. There are ways in Answers to connect personally to others, so solicitations do not belong in questions and answers."

As a general rule: if the question is unlikely to interest people who are looking through resolved questions, then it's probably against the community guidelines.

Hopefully you were soliciting a hot guy to help you out since you got a violation for asking!

I think this is for your own protection. Yahoo doesn't want you giving out personal information like personal addresses.
Also this "solicitation" may seem like a business solicitation which probably goes against this websites rules. Thats not what this site is all about.

Yeah I got a violation too. I was asking what women thought of guys who shave their scotums; its not like I was asking for a woman to shave my scrotum cause that would be solicitation.

I got one last week for solicitation...because I asked who wanted a chocolate chip cookie........people are just reporting others left and right, for no reason.....

I had a resolved question deleted today (asked/resolved Sunday) for point-gaming....

The trolls have found a new toy...other than just the thumbs down.....

Maybe they think you are asking for payed help?

You could ask your question like: How to hang your Christmas lights e.t.c.

Just an idea,
