I know the fuel shortage of the 70's impacted the auto industry, but how did that justify some of the god awful cars that were made then? American cars used to be known for beautiful clean lines and bold styling.

Can't tell ya. Hated them myself.
Latest '70s car I had was a '76 Malibu classic.
Had a '75 Mustang ll that didn't look too bad.
In the '80s they looked like Escorts!!! I never did understand that one.
Biggest thing about car makers - they make what sells.
If it don't sell, it don't get made.
Leaves only one thing - Somebody liked them.
Don't know who, couldn't get anyone to admit it.
Got a question in return for you - why pick on late '70s/early '80s? Have you seen what they make today?
Some make a VW Thing look classy!

Actually the cars of the 1970s were quite nicely styled as compared to the jellybean generic appliance cars of today. The 80s cars probably had a different look because the use of computers in car design was beginning. Today cars are ugly appliances with all the same styling... Jelly bean with some slight curves... Boring thow-away pieces of junk...

Bigger was better! and gas was under a buck a gallon, we didn't have to fight the wind or compete with euro/jap design. It was an "EMBARGO", we weren't allowing in oil from OPEC. Cars were not supposed be beauty queens, they were supposed to be safe and reliable. Names like Caprice, Crown Victoria, and New Yorker were the top of the food chain.Technology got us more mpg's per gallon but why does it cost more ? Because we're using less ....get it!! More car then before getting better mpg still mean we're using less. The power of supply and demand is backwards here. Supply is there and demand is down means cheaper price but not if you allow politicians in the formula. Bad for the oil business.

They were muscle cars and they had a lot more power compared to the cars we have today. Due to the power, the engines were big and also the front and back were long, because it would help help a lot during the accident.

Many still feel the cars were really great and they have a lot more value today.

I liked them actually. But American cars have always lacked personality if you ask me - give me a 1983 VW Golf any day!
