Seti is search for extraterestial intelegence, In 1977 sti pick up a signal from the area of sagitariuos and its known as the WOW signal and was heard for aprox, 50 seconds,, Try a search for the seti wow signal and you can read all about it, Seti never heard the sound agian and it was not a sound of this earth,

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is a field of research that looks for evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations by trying to detect their communications technology. There have been more than 100 individual, independent SETI projects since 1960. Most have searched for radio signals but some have searched in the optical and infrared parts of the spectrum,
There is no one organization conducting SETI. Currently there are groups conducting SETI programs in about half a dozen countries.

the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence.
It's an organization aimed at trying to find life outside of our own existence. Sometime during the 70s, their facility at Ohio State University detected a signal with enough strength to possibly be alien-like. It only last for 72 seconds and we've been looking for it since then. Go on a search engine and look up "wow signal". It's pretty interesting.

the funny thing is - there is a large number of people that think the Search for Extraterrestrial Life should start in Washington, DC.
maybe we should DNA test our Congressmen?
