I'm curious.

In forums, I notice that many people use the name 'Anonymous' or 'anon' etc when they are writing ridiculous, obscene answers or comments. Why not use a screen name or at least make a name up if you don't want to give your real name? Better yet, who cares if you use your real first name - you're not the only 'John' or 'Mary' in the world...

I just wonder... do these people feel that when others in the forum then 'attack' them for their answers, that they are less affected by this 'attack' because they do not have a 'name' and thus no 'identity' (whoever false it may be) to speak?

I often wonder. Any insights would be great :)

Sorry I should specify. Forums which don't require signing up, i.e. the ones where you can just post down the bottom and just type in your name in the 'name' field.

Anonymity or the feeling thereof tends to make people less responsible, and gives them the feeling of freedom to do whatever they want because there will be no direct repercussions.
In my opinion someone who can't put their name to their commentary or opinion doesn't really believe in their own opinion, and may be using the cover of anonymity to be rude or silly.

Often on forums, "anonymous" users are one or two time visitors i.e. they are just surfing find the forum and post without really setting up an account, this is basically a form of trolling. The other option is that they are a newbie and don't understand or realize they can change their profile.

Cowards. Or just people who really don't believe in their own opinions.
